Proposed Personal Leadership Development Plan

        I.            Your Vision and Values for your career and professional life. Describe below how you’d like your career to unfold. Since your professional life is impacted by your personal life, it is important to consider the personal challenges and opportunities that will impact your professional vision.















    II.            Your values. What is most important? What principles and ideals do you most cherish? Rate the values listed below in terms of their importance to you, adding any additional ones you believe are not covered. Identify your top three. Expand upon what your top three values mean to you.

  III.        Description of Goals. Think about your goals in terms of five levels: individual goals (self-improvement); interpersonal goals (relationship improvement); team/organizational (improve teamwork and organizational impact); community goals (be a force for good in the broader world); professional goals (positive influence on your profession). Describe at least one goal for each of the five levels and prioritize these, beginning with the most important ones first. For each goal listed: Why is it important? What benefit will you or others receive if you achieve this goal?

IV.        Strategies and Action Steps toward Each Goal. Describe strategies to meet each goal. Include action steps or changes you will need to make in order to achieve this goal. You may wish to consider challenging assignments you will seek; developmental relationships you will look for with people who can provide mentoring and support; voluntary leadership roles you will seek; training you will need to complete; feedback you need to obtain; the means of reflection you will engage in; or other ways you will seek to achieve your goals. VI.        Build Your Support Systems and Networks. What additional community and professional networks of support will you enlist to refine your interpersonal and leadership skills, develop and enhance your self-confidence, and provide your feedback and support?









VII.        List names of specific people or specific experiences, what that person or experience will provide for you, and a date by which you will talk to this person to enlist their help with your goals. What will you propose to the person who plays prominently in your plan or how you will arrange the desired experience?









VIII.        Personal Mission Statement. Use information you know about yourself (especially with help from a peer-rating or 360-degree rating assessment) to develop a personal mission statement. Give thoughtful consideration to this process. A personal mission statement will generally take considerable reflection and rewriting. Include phrases and sentences that reflect both who you are now and what you want your life to be about; specifically, the things you want to do, the kind of person you want to be, and the positive impact or contributions you want to make during your lifetime.
Review your mission often and use it to guide your development as a leader and as a human being.
